Gerard began his working life as an economist in the banking industry. After several years of overseas travel, he joined the teaching profession with his first appointment at The Hutchins School in Tasmania.

He was Head of Commerce at Toowoomba Grammar School for seven years, during which he completed his Masters of Education focussing on teaching pedagogy. His dissertation was on the use of cognitive strategies and their effectiveness on achieving Productive Pedagogies.

He went on to hold the position of Head of Business at Cannon Hill Anglican College, Brisbane. Geard is a regular workshop presenter and a leading authority on implementing Performance Mangement systems in schools.
